Take Me to the River // Talking Heads
I remember my dad listening to this in his car. It sounded subversive to me as a little kid. I felt like I was getting away with something simply by listening to it. Then there was that awful Billy Big Mouth Bass atrocity.
But, it still manages to transport me back to being a kid and feeling as though I were getting a peek at something forbidden as I listened.
The above summarizes my relationship with this track perfectly. I vividly remember hearing this (along with nrbq’s At Yankee Stadium) while riding in the car with my father - thinking how this must be some kind of secret musical treasure he’d just passed on to me.
i can distinctly remember the first times i heard this - sitting in a lincoln park apartment and making my friend who had the album play this track over and over. but my most vivid recollection of this song was the night that about ten of us went to see “stop making sense.” we were all living in chicago at the time, and i can remember coming out of the theatre and feeling like music had all been made new, and that absolutely anything could happen. the talking heads, this song and this album will always be a little bit magic to me because of this memory.
